Student Voice: Red Ribbon Week is More Than Just Fun
Red Ribbon Week is filled with fun activities and school spirit, but the meaning behind the week is more important. Red Ribbon Week is the nation’s largest and longest-running prevention campaign, reminding students that choosing to be drug- and alcohol-free can make a difference in their future. As a member of the Drug-Free All Stars, I believe it’s important for parents to understand why schools host Red Ribbon Week activities. Parents have a significant influence on their children’s decisions about alcohol and other drugs, so encouraging them to participate in Red Ribbon Week for the real reason behind it can help protect young people from risky behaviors.
Red Ribbon Week is important because the choices students make can affect their families, schools, and our community. We cannot let the message of Red Ribbon Week end when the activities are over. Parents, use this week as an opportunity to have honest conversations with your children about drugs/alcohol, listen to their concerns, and remind them that they can come to you for support no matter the situation. When students, parents, schools, and our community work together, we can make a lasting difference. Let’s make sure the red ribbons we wear represent a commitment that continues all year, not just during Red Ribbon Week.
